Description

Head to rural Ireland via the National Theatre with Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa. Dancing at Lughnasa tickets are available on London Theatre now. It’s 1936 in County Donegal. In a small village, five sisters do all they can to alleviate their poverty-stricken lives. They also need to raise Michael, a seven-year-old boy, and their Uncle Jack, their elderly relative who is back home after 25 years as a missionary in Uganda. The five Mundy sisters — Kate, Maggie, Agnes, Rose, and Chris — must also find their place in the world. When the festival of Lughnasa arrives, Pagan and Christian views collide. In a turbulent political time, these sisters must fight for each other, and show themselves what it means to love and survive. Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa play premiered at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre in 1990. It later transferred to the National Theatre, and eventually the Plymouth Theatre (now Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre) on Broadway, winning Best New Play at the Oliviers and the Tonys respectively. Although the play is regularly revived in Ireland, this production marks the first Dancing at Lughnasa London revival in over a decade. Reviews of the 2009 production read: “[it’s an] utterly beguiling, deeply moving revival… at every moment the play feels startlingly true, tender and fresh.”Assisted PerformancesCaptioned: Thursday 25 May – 7.30pmAudio Described: Saturday 6 May – 2pm
